Arlington Court and Clovelly

Today we drove from Cherry's place to Clovelly on the North Devon/Atlantic coast. We're spending two nights here in Clovelly, one in the hotel at the top of the village and one in the hotel right down on the sea.

We came via Arlington Court, a National Trust property:

Arlington Court is a neoclassical style country house in North Devon, built in the 1820s by the Chichester family. Sir Francis Chichester is related to the family and spent a lot of time there as a child. The house is full of model ships and eclectic family memorabilia and there's also a wonderful carriage museum which is England's most representative collection of carriages. They include those built for Queen Victoria and Tom Thumb. And the Speaker's golden carriage last used at Charles and Diana's wedding.

Then we drove to Clovelly which is on the north Devon coast. It's a privately owned, pedestrian only former fishing village:

The village stretches down a very steep cobbled lane to the sea.

We went down to the Red Lion for dinner. We are staying there on Wednesday night.

I'll put all our Clovelly photos in tomorrow's blog.
